Description

CDEL administers the Pro Se Adult Guardianship Help Desk (“Help Desk”) at the Daley Center, assisting pro se petitioners file.

Volunteering at the Help Desk is a great way to learn the Guardianship process, preparing pleadings, Summonses and Notices of Motion. CDEL welcomes those who wish to obtain valuable practical experience, as well as those seeking academic credit or volunteer hours for public interest programs.

Volunteers:

  • Provide information on guardianship proceedings.
  • Work 1-on-1 with Petitioners, helping to fill out all of the pleadings.
  • Direct Petitioners through the process, including filing the petition, service of Summons and Notice.

The Help Desk operates Mon - Fri, from 9 am - 4 pm on days Court is in session. Volunteers commit to 1 shift per week, 9 - 12:30 or 12:30 - 4.

The next training is May 25th from 3 to 5 pm. If you cannot attend, email for other options.

About the Organization

The Center for Disability and Elder Law (CDEL) provides high-quality, pro bono legal assistance to persons marginalized by poverty, age and/or disability. CDEL’s organizational structure consists of a modest in-house staff which supports a network of hundreds of volunteer attorneys and paralegals. CDEL volunteers provide legal representation in a wide range of civil practice areas including: guardianship, simple estate planning, landlord/tenant, consumer fraud, civil rights, elder abuse and real estate. CDEL has also developed a number of limited engagement opportunities for those volunteers that are unable to handle cases that require long-term client commitments.
