The Major Gifts Officer for The Chicago Bar Foundation (CBF) is responsible for creating and executing a strategic major and planned gifts fundraising plan to build current and longer-term support for the CBF. In addition, the organization is embarking on a $1.5 million fundraising initiative in honor of its 70th anniversary and the Major Gifts Officer will lead this effort.
Reporting to the Director of Development & Donor Programs and working closely with the Executive Director, Development & Events Manager and Board of Directors, the Major Gifts Officer will be responsible for securing major gifts and planned gifts for the CBF by managing a group of current and potential major gift and planned giving donors, and increasing donor retention and individual donor levels of giving and involvement. The position is exempt.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create a major gifts ($2,500+) program plan consistent with the CBF’s overall strategic and business plans, working in concert with the Executive Director, Director of Development & Donor Programs and the CBF Development Committee.
- Staff the committee leading major gifts efforts; in particular, the special committee established to lead the $1.5 million fundraising initiative.
- Identify and qualify major gift prospects through internal and external sources.
- Create individual goals and personalized plans for each person identified as a current or potential major donor based on the donor’s history of giving and the CBF’s knowledge of that donor’s potential.
- Maintain a substantial portfolio of current and potential major donors, and manage relationships by cultivating, soliciting and stewarding these donors.
- Prepare the Executive Director and volunteers for their gift solicitations, accompany on calls as needed and provide appropriate follow-up.
- Plan and coordinate donor relationship-building activities and events through cultivation, recognition and stewardship.
- Work with program and communications staff to prepare proposals and other donor communication and solicitation materials.
- Contribute to the timely and accurate acknowledgment and recognition of major gift donors.
- Ensure the accuracy and reliability of information entered into the donor database regarding the major gifts program.
- Create monthly reports that accurately reflect activities and progress in meeting the major gift program goals.
- Convene and staff a new committee to develop and execute strategies for a formal planned giving program for the CBF, building on the current Legacy of Justice Society.
- Identify and cultivate prospects for planned gifts.
- Make appropriate requests for planned gifts in partnership with the Executive Director and assigned volunteers.
- Personally provide ongoing stewardship for members of the Legacy of Justice Society.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive menu of communications, cultivation and stewardship activities for planned giving donors.
- Attend major legal and philanthropic community events to help build awareness of the CBF and develop donor relationships.
- Maintain a clear understanding of the CBF’s mission and its projects, programs and other activities that carry out the mission.
- Complete other projects and duties as assigned.
Salary and Benefits: This fulltime position* offers a competitive salary and excellent benefits package. The salary range for the position is $70,000-$80,000 depending on experience.

- Bachelor’s degree required.
- A minimum of three years professional development experience, especially individual giving and board/volunteer relations.
- Demonstrated experience in meeting fundraising goals.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with board members, volunteers, donors and staff.
- Strong organizational and communications skills.
- Proficiencies in fundraising software and information management.
- Understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of the CBF.
